A Poetry Chapbook by Kelly Shepherd
Translated by Sunhyung Kwon
Kelly Shepherd spent 31 months as a teacher
in the cities of Gwangju (20042006) and Seoul (20082009).
if one petal falls began in the pages of pocket-sized notebooks, as
Kelly walked and travelled extensively and sought to record the vibrant
minutiae of South Koreas urban spaces and mountainous landscapes.
He and Sunhyung Kwon crossed paths as English academy coworkers in Seoul,
and the idea of a poetry collaboration was born somewhere between back-alley
fried chicken and long-distance email.
Kelly Shepherds nonfiction and poetry have been
published widely in literary journals and magazines. He has two previous
poetry chapbooks: Circumambulations (Publishing Beyond Borders,
Reykjavik 2003) and the bony world (The Rasp and the Wine, Edmonton
2010). Originally from Smithers, British Columbia, Kelly is currently
completing an MA in Religious Studies at the University of Alberta,
in Edmonton.
Sunhyung Kwon lives in the city of Seoul, South Korea.
After serving in the military, where he worked as an interpreter, he
majored in English and English Literature at Yonsei University. If
one petal falls is his first published work of poetry translation.
